Call for Submissions – Issue 10: ‘Everything is Fine!’

|

For the past three years, the world has persisted in a seemingly constant state of exception. Unprecedented global challenges have wracked minds, people, and economies. As the pandemic subsides, war and incipient economic collapse have taken its place; climate change has become inevitable and looms ominously at the horizon, closer every day; inflation and the repercussions of ever increasing interest rates remain alarmingly out of control. This new decade has become defined by unparalleled, universal challenges.

And yet, we prevail. Somehow, hysterics have made way for an uncharacteristic stoicism in the face of ever new challenges. If the crisis never stops, does it cease to be a crisis? Earlier this year, an impending banking crisis in the image of 2008 was swiftly averted by an almost chillingly efficient succession of backroom deals and orchestrated market reshuffles. At the same time, the demise of global savings has failed to cause riots and economies truck on despite skyrocketing costs of lending, spurred by an unremitting stream of public money. As the next major disruptor, artificial intelligence, rears its head, the world seems to calmly await opportunities, unfazed by the potential of catastrophe.

Have we returned to a regular state of calmness or have constant crises just become the ‘new normal’?
