Levels of inflation are at their highest level for 40 years. Energy prices are soaring, pushing many households into debt – where they face record-high interest rates. The UK and other major economies are tipped to enter into recession as soon as October, but cash-strapped governments may not have the resources needed to prop up the economy.
Record temperatures, increased natural disasters, drought, and wildfires confirm that the climate crisis is already here, and not just a prospect of the future. Food and housing insecurity are on the rise – especially for the vulnerable – sparking protests in places like Sierra Leone, Argentina, and Ecuador.
Multiple countries have descended into political turmoil as governments collapsed or were overthrown in Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Italy. Geopolitical tensions are rising, and violent conflict is claiming hundreds of thousands of lives in Ethiopia, Ukraine, and Yemen with no end in sight.
Whereas the 1920s seemed a decade of prosperity, the 2020s seems doomed to be marked by despair. But must this be the case? Where do we go from here?

We invite you to contribute to the Oxford Political Review’s 8th issue, on the theme of ‘On the Brink’.
The deadline for submissions is Friday, 9th September.
We are looking for submissions of a length between 800 and 2,000 words, formatted along the lines of our style guide. For more information on our submission guidelines, please follow this link. Pieces that do not adhere to our submission guidelines will be rejected.
If you have an idea for a submission but you’re not sure if it’s what we’re looking for, you’re welcome to pitch it to us before you write a full-length piece. We recommend that you send your pitch well in advance as, to be considered for our 8th issue, a full draft of your article must be received before our submission deadline.
Typically we have more submissions than we can accept. If we like your submission but cannot accept it for the print issue, we will publish it separately online.
