Nicholas Leah from the Oxford Political Review and Md Azhar Uddin Bhuiyan from the Dhaka Law and Politics Review jointly host a panel event titled “Founding Bangladesh: Centenary Reflection on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of the Nation”.

2020 marks the 100th year anniversary of the birth of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first President of an independent Bangladesh. August 15 this year also marked 45 years since his assassination in 1975.

The panel event (which was live-streamed by OPR and DULPR) features three guest speakers: Dr Dipu Moni, the Honourable Minister of Education in the Government of Bangladesh and a former Foreign Minister; Dr Salim Mahmud, the Information and Research Secretary of the Bangladeshi Awami League and a Professor of Law at Dhaka University, and Professor James Manor, an Emeritus Professor of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London and an expert in South Asian politics. They discussed three themes: Sheikh Mujib’s life and political career; his assassination in 1975, and his legacy in modern Bangladesh, particularly through his daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
